RCAM Welding/Metal Fabrication
An Associate of Applied Science Degree Program

Program Description

The Welding/Metal Fabrication program prepares individuals as welders or metal fabricators. The curriculum focuses on the development of knowledge and skills in Oxyfuel welding and brazing, Flux-Core Arc Welding (FCAW), Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW) (MIG), Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW) (TIG), and Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW).

How to Apply

A student desiring to enroll in the Associate of Applied Science degree program in Industrial Technology - Concentration: Welding/Metal Fabrication must:

  • Submit the Northeast State Application for Admission with a application fee to the Office of Admissions and Records.
  • Indicate Industrial Technology - Concentration: Welding/Metal Fabrication as the desired major on the Northeast State application form.
  • Meet with a Welding/Metal Fabrication program faculty advisor prior to registering for classes. [Need a link here to advisor]

Additional courses may be required to overcome deficiencies in English, mathematics, and reading.

Job Opportunities

 

  • Combination Welder: Produces a variety of welds using different welding processes.
  • Welding Fabricator: Assists engineers in designing, fabricating, inspecting, and installing welding fabrications.
  • Pipe Welder: Performs welding on different types of pipe using a variety of welding processes.

Program competencies

The Welding/Metal Fabrication graduate is competent to:

  • Use welding terminology, procedures and joint design meeting AWS D1.1 structural, ASME IX, API 1104 Code requirements
  • Perform arc weld according to AWS D1.1 structural welding code requirements
  • Perform arc and GTAW welds according to ASME Section IX code requirements on ferrous and non-ferrous metals
  • Examine metallurgical metallographic specimens and identify materials microscopically, apply hardness and tensile tests and interpret the results; demonstrate an understanding of metals and their crystalline structure; and understand the effects of heat, rate of heating and cooling and alloying elements on metals
  • Design and fabricate products using triangulation and radial line principles
  • Construct fabrication forms using parallel and radial line pattern development techniques
  • Weld pipe using ASME, AWS, TRA specifications by passing visual and guided bend test in the 6 G position
  • Prepare special metals with plasma cutting and the use of GTAW, GMAW and special processes including preheat, pre-purge, weld, post purge and post heat
  • Demonstrate and perform safe working practices in the welding industry
